According to psychologist Mihaly Czikszentmihalyi , we are at our best when we are present, when our attention is aligned with our actions. It is a state of pure happiness and engagement with the present. You may experience this when creating art, listening to music, or while working, but how often do you make deliberate time to do nothing but be present? As Anders Ericsson famously claimed, deliberate practice -- intentionally stretching the limits of your abilities-- is the most effective path to master any skill.
Acknowledging that this is the structure of the game we are playing allows us to play it differently. Goals are important, but what is the purpose of our goals if not to serve our experience? Realizing the value of our experience helps to not waste time and suffering working toward goals with no path back to the present. Thoughts are just that — thoughts.
follow link I have always been a thinker, whether I consciously choose to think or not. Ideas and judgments constantly collide inside my mind. As I grappled with depression in my early teens, my natural habit of brooding became a formidable enemy which I would do almost anything to avoid. I began to adopt these statements as truth before thinking twice. It destroyed my wellbeing during those years and reminds me of just how much our beliefs affect everything else.
How might things have changed? Why or why not? How do I know? It involves noticing thoughts like a distant observer while questioning their validity with skepticism and rationality. Then ask them questions. Is there really evidence to believe that? Or are you just catastrophizing? The point is to find the truth, and mindfulness is a great tool for this. Many worries tend to fall away upon discovering the truth -- that everything is usually ok. What usually happens is we feel a bit unsettled by the movement of the traffic.
So we run out into the road and try to stop the cars or maybe even chase after a few Training our mind is about changing our relationship with the passing thoughts and feelings. Ideas arise seemingly out of nowhere. If you doubt this, close your eyes right now and try to stop your thoughts. Not so easy? Try applying this mindset next time you feel a destructive emotion and notice how quickly that emotion subsides.
The Second Noble Truth of Buddhism states that our attachments to our desires are the source of our suffering because everything will inevitably escape our control. It is our harmful attachments that mindfulness helps manage. Whenever you feel a strong attachment to something, instead of stressing over it or trying to get it, what if you just sat and observed that attachment?
