Submitted by Christopher Bergland on December 9, - pm. Great Help! According to psychologist Mihaly Czikszentmihalyi , we are at our best when we are present, when our attention is aligned with our actions. It is a state of pure happiness and engagement with the present. You may experience this when creating art, listening to music, or while working, but how often do you make deliberate time to do nothing but be present? As Anders Ericsson famously claimed, deliberate practice -- intentionally stretching the limits of your abilities-- is the most effective path to master any skill.

Ideas arise seemingly out of nowhere. If you doubt this, close your eyes right now and try to stop your thoughts. Not so easy? Try applying this mindset next time you feel a destructive emotion and notice how quickly that emotion subsides.

The Second Noble Truth of Buddhism states that our attachments to our desires are the source of our suffering because everything will inevitably escape our control. It is our harmful attachments that mindfulness helps manage. Whenever you feel a strong attachment to something, instead of stressing over it or trying to get it, what if you just sat and observed that attachment?
